What does it mean to be a teacher in a world where a child can ask AI a question and get an answer in seconds? As a Gen-Z educator, I often think about this. We have smart classrooms, digital boards, endless online resources and technology that can do things we could not have imagined a few years ago. Yet, I believe the heart of teaching has not changed. For me, the answer lies in the life of one extraordinary woman\u2014Mother Teresa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mother Teresa never stood before a classroom with a textbook or a lesson plan. Yet, she taught the world some of its most important lessons: love, compassion, humility, service and hope. Her classroom was life itself, and her students were the people the world often overlooked. That makes me pause and look at my own classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Every day, we meet children who bring more into the classroom than their books and school bags. Some carry insecurities. Some struggle to keep up. Some are dealing with problems we may never see. And sometimes, all a child needs is a teacher who notices. A smile. A little patience. A second chance. A quiet, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d Or simply, \u201cI believe you can do better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These may seem like small things, but Mother Teresa\u2019s life reminds us that small acts, when done with love, can make a big difference. Of course, teaching is not only about being kind. Children need discipline, boundaries and accountability. But discipline does not have to mean harshness. We can be firm without being unkind. We can correct without humiliating. We can demand excellence while still showing understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education should not merely produce students who score well. It should help young people learn to think, care, and respect and make a difference. Technology can give us information. AI can give us answers. But can it notice the child sitting silently at the back of the classroom? Can it celebrate a tiny victory? Can it say, with genuine warmth, \u201cI am proud of you\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is where a teacher matters. As a Gen-Z teacher, my methods may change and my classroom may become more digital. But one thing must never change\u2014the human heart behind education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mother Teresa taught us that we may not be able to change the whole world, but we can make a difference in one person\u2019s world. Perhaps that is what teaching truly is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To teach is to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To teach is to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To teach is to give hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if, years from now, even one student remembers me not just for what I taught, but for how I made them feel, I will know that I have truly taught.
