Feast Day : 01st October<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 ” O Little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of Love.” — opening prayer of the novena to St. Therese of Lisieux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In devotion to St. Therese, many Roman Catholics pray a special novena to her, believing that she will send them a mystical rose from heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therese Martin, was the last of nine children born to Louis and Zelie Martin on January 2, 1873, in Alencon, France. Only five of these children lived to reach adulthood. After losing her mother at the age of four, she was well looked after by her father and sisters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therese had a conversion that transformed her life, on Christmas Eve in 1886, at the age of 14. Her powerful energy and sensitive spirit was turned towards love. She entered the convent at the age of 15, in Lisieux, to give her whole life to God. She took the religious name, Sister Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

She lived a simple life of prayer and was gifted with a great intimacy with God. Through sickness and dark nights of doubt and fear, she remained faithful to God, rooted in his merciful love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She loved flowers and saw herself as the “little flower of Jesus,” who gave glory to God by just being her beautiful little self among all the other flowers in God’s garden. Because of this beautiful analogy, the title, “little flower” remained with St. Therese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world came to know Therese through her autobiography, “Story of a Soul.” Therese’s spirituality is of doing the ordinary, with extraordinary love. She defined her doctrine of the Little Way as “the way of spiritual childhood, the way of trust and absolute surrender.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therese said she came to the Carmelite Convent “to save souls and pray for the priests.” Shortly before she died, she wrote: ” I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She died on September 30,1897, of tuberculosis, at the age of 24. “My God, I love you!” were the last words of the story of her life. Therese of Lisieux was canonized in 1925. (Her feast day is on October 1)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 19,1997, Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, the third woman to be recognized in light of her holiness and the influence of her teaching on spirituality in the Church. She is the patron saint of missionaries, florists, pilots and priests. She is also invoked on behalf of the sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St.Therese experienced life as all of us do, facing moments of joy, but also moments of profound crisis and pain. She reminds us that in his Son, God came to look for the weak and imperfect, and that He desires to be present and at work especially in the midst of our brokenness and sins, in the areas where we need Him the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us therefore, acknowledge ourselves as weak and powerless to live the Gospel as a little child who is trying to go up the stairway with steps too steep, putting our trust in God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Agree to be that little child.” Through the practice of all the virtues, raise your little foot to the scale in the stairway of holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can Pray to St. Therese of the Child Jesus through the following prayer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

O glorious St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of the Child Jesus, the Little Flower of Jesus, you trusted completely in God’s infinit\u0119 love and taught us the Little Way of humility, simplicity, and confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Help me to love God with all my heart through the ordinary duties of each day. Teach me to offer every sacrifice, every joy, and every suffering with love for Jesus and for the salvation of souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obtain for me the grace I now seek, if it is according to God’s holy will. Strengthen my faith, deepen more, and increase my love for God and my neighbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May I follow your example of childlike trust, finding holiness in the little things and serving others with kindness, patience, and joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se, who promised to spend your heaven doing good on earth and to let fall a shower of roses, pray for me and for all those I love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May I one day join you in praising God forever in heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of the Child Jesus, pray for us. Amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
