Her name was Catherine.

A Young Woman of Extraordinary Faith

St Catherine of Alexandria is believed to have lived during the early fourth century. She was born into a noble family and was blessed with exceptional intelligence and a deep love for learning. Her search for truth eventually led her to Christianity.

At a time when Christians faced persecution under Roman rule, Catherine boldly defended her faith. Tradition recounts that she challenged Emperor Maxentius over his treatment of Christians. The emperor summoned learned philosophers to dispute her beliefs, but Catherine’s wisdom and conviction reportedly persuaded several of them to embrace Christianity.

Refusing to abandon her faith despite threats and imprisonment, Catherine was condemned to death. She is traditionally associated with a spiked wheel, which miraculously broke when she was to be tortured. She was eventually martyred by beheading. The wheel remains her most recognisable symbol, representing her unwavering faith and courage.

St Catherine’s connection with Goa

For Goans, St Catherine holds a particularly significant place in our religious and historical heritage.

On 25th November 1510, the feast of St Catherine, Afonso de Albuquerque captured Goa from the forces of the Bijapur Sultanate. The Portuguese attributed their victory to the saint’s intercession, and a church was subsequently built in her honour.

The magnificent Sé Cathedral in Old Goa, dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria, stands as an enduring reminder of this historical connection. Its soaring ceilings, ornate altars and famous Golden Bell make it one of Goa’s most treasured religious monuments.

Each year, the feast of St Catherine is celebrated on 25th November, bringing the faithful together in prayer and thanksgiving.

St Catherine’s life carries a powerful message, particularly for young people. She reminds us that true wisdom goes beyond academic achievement and that it involves recognising truth, standing by one’s principles and acting with compassion and integrity.

In a world where pressures and popular opinions can easily influence our decisions, her example encourages us to remain steadfast in faith while respecting others.

As we celebrate her feast, may we draw inspiration from her courage and commitment to Christ. And whenever we visit the majestic Sé Cathedral, may we remember the extraordinary young woman whose faith continues to inspire us.

-Louella Santimano Dias

Sé Cathedral, Old Goa — Dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria, whose feast is celebrated on 25th November.
