Celebrated on the final Sunday before Advent in the Roman Catholic Church and widely observed across Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian traditions – this Feast declares that history itself culminates not in earthly empires but in the reign of God. This Feast proclaims that Jesus Christ is Lord not only of the Church but of every human heart, every nation and the whole of creation. His kingdom is eternal, founded not upon power or conquest but upon truth, justice, mercy and self-sacrificing love.

Scripture foretells this universal sovereignty across eras. The Old Testament announces a cosmic dominion in Daniel 7:14: “To Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom that all peoples, nations and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” The Book of Psalms mirrors this eternal majesty singing “The Lord reigns, He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established firm and secure” Psalm93:1. “He is the King of Glory” Psalm 24:10. The New Testament unveils this Ruler, in full splendour where the book of Revelation 19:16 proclaims Him “Kind of Kings and Lord of Lords.”

Yet Christ’s reign subverts all worldly definitions of power. Rather than ruling through domination or military force, His Kingship is forged in self-emptying love and servant leadership. As He declared, in the Gospel of Mark 10:45 “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” His throne was the Cross; His sceptre, Mercy; His crown, woven of thorns. This Feast was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI through his encyclical ‘Quas Primas.’ It arose during the period marked by war, aggressive nationalism, secularism, and the rejection of religious values in public life. The Pope wished to remind the world that earthly rulers and political systems are temporary, whereas Christ’s sovereignty is everlasting. Originally celebrated on the last Sunday of October, this Feast was transferred after the Second Vatican Council to the last Sunday of the liturgical year, giving it a profound connection with Advent – the Season of waiting for the coming King.

-Terence D’Souza

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe stands as the crowning finale of the Catholic liturgical year.
