It is thus ranked first and most important of the four Major Basilicas in Rome, as well, and, owing to its pre-eminence it is also uniquely an Archbasilica.

The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is a feast day in the Catholic Church on 9 November. It commemorates the dedication and consecration of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran byPope Sylvester I in Rome in 324.

The Readings of the day are about the Temple in Jerusalem with the Gospel Reading being about Jesus Cleansing the Temple.

Key Aspects:

The Mother Church: Although many mistake St. Peter’s Basilica as the primary Catholic church, the Lateran Basilica is the official cathedral of the Pope (the Bishop of Rome). It holds the unique title of “Omnium urbis et orbisecclesiarum mater et caput”—the Mother and Head of all Churches in the City and the World. Historical Turning Point: “The Lateran” takes its name from the family historically associated with land; the complex of buildings on the site was known as the palace of the Laterani family, a high-ranking family in service to several Roman emperors. During the first Christian centuries, when the Church was illegal, formal structures were difficult to establish. That changed with Constantine, who, early in the fourth century, first legalized Christianity and then gave it official favour. The Lateran Palace came into his possession around 311; Constantine gave it to the Church in 313, and it became the seat of the bishops of Rome from that time.

Evolution of the Name: Originally dedicated exclusively to Christ the Savior (Domus Dei or House of God), it was later co-dedicated to Saint John the Baptist(10th century) and Saint John the Evangelist (12th century), which is why it is commonly referred to today as Saint John Lateran.

Spiritual Significance: Liturgically, the feast goes beyond honouring a physical building. According to Vatican News, the day emphasizes the unity of the global Church and reminds believers that their own bodies are the true, living temples of the Holy Spirit .

Sacred Relics and Altars: Beneath the high altar sits a wooden table, tradition links to St. Peter, who allegedly used it to celebrate the Eucharist. It also features the papal cathedral (the official seat of the Pope) and houses historic papal tombs.

A point to be noted: there is a lot of history both in the architecture and the spirituality of this place. Even when one visits we only get a glimpse and you require to stay there for at least a week to know and learn and experience the faith.

– Gladys Da Silva

Why is the Lateran Basilica important?
