An invitation to encounter Christ through the Gospels
In a world filled with entertainment on our Mobile phones, associated with Facebook, Instagram etc., wherein we often spend hours on content, I invite you to experience something that can bring us closer to God. The Chosen, a multi-season television series based on the life of Jesus Christ, offers a beautiful opportunity to rediscover our Lord Jesus and the people who encountered Him.
Created by Dallas Jenkins, The Chosen presents the story of Jesus largely through the eyes of those who knew Him—His disciples, Mary Magdalene, Nicodemus, and many others. It brings the world of the Gospels to life and helps us imagine the people, places, struggles and emotions behind the familiar Gospel passages.
More than a television series
What makes The Chosen particularly valuable is that it can encourage us to return to the Bible. The creators themselves make it clear that the series is a dramatization: certain conversations, backgrounds, timelines and characters have been developed imaginatively. Therefore, ‘The Chosen’ should not replace Scripture or be regarded as a substitute for the Gospels. Rather, as I have experienced it, it rushes us to read the Gospel more prayerfully and to encounter Jesus more personally.
As we watch Peter leave his nets, Matthew struggle with his past, Mary Magdalene experience healing, or the disciples gradually discover who Jesus truly is, we may begin to ask ourselves: Where am I in this story? What is Jesus saying to me? Am I ready to leave my nets and follow Him?
An invitation from our Archbishop
The Archbishop of Archdiocese of Goa–Daman Most Rev. Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão has encouraged the Church in Goa to explore ‘The Chosen’ as a means of bringing people together around the story of Jesus and fostering meaningful Gospel conversations. In his letter dated 17th June 2026 and addressed to the Priests, Religious and Lay Faithfull he invited representatives from all the parishes and urged everyone to promote this encounter with Christ within our communities. This is therefore not simply an invitation to watch another television programme. It is an invitation to encounter Jesus together.
Let us “come and see”
I encourage our parishioners—families, youth, children, senior citizens and parish groups—to give The Chosen a chance. Why not begin with just one episode? Watch it as a family. Keep the Bible beside you. After the episode, open the corresponding Gospel passage and discuss what touched you.
Parents can use it as an opportunity to speak with their children about Jesus. Couples can watch it together and reflect on their faith. Youth groups can use episodes as starting points for meaningful discussions. Parish communities can organize Chosen Encounter gatherings where people watch, reflect, pray and share their experiences.
The official The Chosen app consist of Seasons 1–5 available free of charge, and the episodes can also be streamed through the official website and other platforms. The Producers are on schedule to release ‘The Crucifixion’ coming Lent in March 2027. Prepare yourself for the same.
Jesus’ invitation to His first disciples remains an invitation to us today:
“Come and see.” (John 1:39)
Let us accept that invitation. Let us witness Jesus as the living Lord who continues to call, heal, forgive and transform lives.
Come and see. Watch. Read the Gospel. Reflect. Pray.
